What is an MSH file?

MSH files mostly belong to Gmsh by Christophe Geuzaine and Jean-François Remacle. MSH files usually contain meshes for defining the structure of 3D models created with various design programs. Gmsh, a cross-platform mesh generator saves 3-dimensional finite element mesh data in MSH files. Fluent, a computational fluid dynamics software uses MSH filename extension to save files containing 3D mesh models. Orbiter, a 3D space simulation software saves 3D vertices, geometry, and mesh groups applied to different parts of a model (space shuttles, stations, and other space objects) in MSH files. Godot Engine, a game development platform automatically generates an MSH (binary-encoded mesh) file when a user imports an OBJ file. PowerShell, a system configuration and task automation framework for Windows operating system also stores scripts in MSH files. MSH filename extension is also associated with the movie project file format used by Visual Communication, an obsolete video editing/broadcasting software. A MSH movie project contained images, videos, text clippings, and transitions.

How to open MSH files

You need a suitable software like Gmsh to open an MSH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MSH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MSH file directly in the browser:. MSH file format details:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the MSH files produces the following result:

MSH is a very commonly used file extension and includes many different file formats. The file formats most commonly found in MSH files are:

• 15% of all MSH files belong to Gmsh Mesh. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The average file size is 320 KB with most files being between 960 bytes and 9 MB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as $MeshFormat, $EndMeshFormat, $Nodes and 2.2 0 8. These files are attributed to mesh, cylinder, circle, tetmesh, output, cube, rectangle, ernie, plate, world and geom.
• 15% of all MSH files belong to Fluent mesh. MSH files can be up to 3 GB in size, but are often around 180 KB - 120 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: Fluent, (0 grid written by ANSYS Meshing, nodes:   (10 (id start end type) (x y z ...)), File, 0 machine configuration:, (4 (60 0 0 1 2 4 4 4 8 4 8 4)), faces:   (13 (id start end type elemTy and (0 "Dimension:"). A common filename is FFF.msh. These files are often associated with fluent, naca, watertank, inkjet, elbow and pipe.

All other MSH files (70%) have no consistent format, often e.g. Orbiter mesh, MASH script, Source, HEDR, Adobe, MESH, Eternity, GFF, ARANZ, NULL and SHPM.
