What is a MU file

MU files mostly belong to KSP by Private Division. The MU file extension is primarily associated with 3D meshes used to create the in-game appearance of space shuttle parts and other 3D objects created using Unity 3D, a 3D modelling software. MU 3D models are usually saved as model.mu using a proprietary format that is only supported and used by Kerbal Space Program (KSP), a flight simulation game set in space. model.mu files reference texture files in the same directory. The part.cfg file found in the directory created by Kerbal Space Program references the model.mu file as a mesh. Also, earlier versions of Quattro Pro, a spreadsheet application used MU filename extension to store its menu definitions.

How to open MU files

You need a suitable software like KSP to open a MU file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. MU file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. 80% of all MU files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "FF 2A 01 00" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 7 KB to 500 KB. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: Untagged. An example of a file name is model.mu. These files can be linked to tank, antenna, restock, radial, fasa, bluedog, stack and size.
5% of all MU files are based on the popular JSON file format. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are 7 KB to 34 KB in size, with a median of 13 KB. The files contain the following words: "MachUp": {, "geometries": [, "metadata": {, "type": "Object", uuid, "generator": "Object3D.toJSON" and "version": 4.4.
