Opening an NFF File

The NFF file type is primarily associated with Bryce.

NFFFile Extension NFF
File extension: NFF
File type:  minimal 3D scene description

What is an NFF file

NFF files mostly belong to Bryce by DAZ. Bryce, a program for creating and rendering 3D scenes uses NFF WorldToolKit file to export terrains, symlats, and converted Boolean meshes. The NFF file extension is associated with the Neutral File Format developed as a minimal 3D scene description language. The contents of an NFF file can include textual data defining the lighting viewpoints, colors, shading parameters, geometry shapes in a scene, and comments. Several CAD programs process the contents of NFF files into their native 3D formats before exporting them. Also, the NFF file format has been used alongside the Standard Procedural Database (SPD) to create databases for testing the efficiency of rendering algorithms and rendering schemes.

How to open an NFF file

You need a suitable software like Bryce to open an NFF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NFF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NFF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert NFF files:

  1. Bryce by DAZ
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NFF files are often referred to as Bryce 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. WorldToolKit (data) by Ibiblo
WorldToolKit is an object oriented C library that provides real-time texture mapping that allowed the rendering 3D graphics on classic computers. The program allowed for rapid virtual world development and stored data using the neutral format (N2). This file format is classified as Data.

NFF file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the NFF files looks like this:

The NFF extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 12% of all NFF files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. Neutral ASCII File Format and Haines NFF scene. Files like these are sometimes linked to appointment, online, survey, group, book, free, lead, para or rotw. Just click the "Choose your .nff file to view" button on this page to find out what your NFF file is.

How to solve problems with NFF files

  • Associate the NFF file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open minimal 3d scene descriptions. Because only the current version supports the latest NFF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the DAZ manufacturer website after an available Bryce update.
  • To make sure that your NFF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
