Opening NSF Files
The NSF file type is primarily associated with IBM Notes.
What is an NSF file?
Most NSF files are the Notes Storage Facility used by IBM Lotus Notes. These files act as a database that stores emails, contact lists, and various documents. You can open them with the IBM Notes client. More technical details are available at IBM Products.
Some NSF files are formatted as Nintendo sound files. They contain music data designed for the NES Sound Chip and can be played using tools like NSFPlay. Additional information can be found on the nesdev website.
A small number of NSF files are used in a National Imagery Transmission Format context, serving specialized imaging purposes.
How can I open an NSF file?
You need a suitable software like IBM Notes to open an NSF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NSF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NSF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

NSF file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the NSF files:
NSF is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 50% of all NSF files belong to Lotus Notes database. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are often between 260 KB and 220 MB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. Some examples of file names are encap2.nsf or NotesActiveMail.nsf. Such files sometimes refer to notes, mail, active, email and rcxb.
- 25% of all NSF files belong to NES Sound Format rip. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 4 KB and 40 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: NESM. These files can be linked to mario, super and bros.
All other NSF files (25%) have no consistent format, the following 4 formats can be found: NATO Secondary Imagery Format. Files like these are sometimes linked to lecture, paper or executive. Just click the "Choose your .nsf file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your NSF file is.

an nsf database is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with NSF files
- Associate the NSF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open databases. Because only the current version supports the latest NSF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available IBM Notes update.
- To make sure that your NSF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NSF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
