All about NTF Files
The NTF file type is primarily associated with Notes.
What is an NTF file?
- Main Use: NTF stands for Lotus Notes Template file. Lotus Notes is a business collaboration software used by bigger enterprises in internal communication collaborative applications, including e-mails, calendars, instant messaging, and internet-browsing applications. Developers use NTF files to store custom Lotus Notes modules capable for the purpose of integration into large-scale Lotus Notes infrastructure. These predefined database templates in the NTF files enable users to quickly generate files with the set parameters. NTF files can be opened on Windows, macOS, and Linux systems using the IBM Lotus Notes application.
- Other Uses: NTF files are also used by the MediaFACE application developed by NEATO. NEATO MediaFACE is a software used for creating custom disc labels. MediaFACE uses NTF files to store text, graphics, and other formatting-related data in a binary format, that can be printed and pasted onto a CD/DVD using a suitable printer. NTF files are also used as container files associated with the National Imagery Transmission Format Standard (NITFS), developed by the United States Department of Defense (DoD), and serve as the main format to exchange image information amongst systems. NTF container files are capable of holding multiple raster images with their vector, text, and other overlay data layers that contain metadata as well.
How can I open an NTF file?
You need a suitable software like Notes to open an NTF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NTF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NTF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert NTF files:
- Notes by HCL
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NTF files are often referred to as Notes data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- MediaFACE (compact disk label file) by NEATONEATO MediaFACE is a labeling program developed for creating printable disc labels, covers, and inserts for CD/DVDs. An NTF file is a CD label file that stores text, graphics, and formatting data. It can be printed on a CD/DVD with a compatible printer. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Manual
- Windows (font file) by MicrosoftWindows is a family of operating systems developed by Microsoft. Windows NT OS family versions are being developed up to these days - with the latest version named Windows 10. The NTF file is a binary file that describes the device fonts of PostScript-compatible printers. In the Windows NT family of OS, Adobe font metrics files must be converted to NTF files. NTF file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the NTF files comes to the following conclusion:
The NTF file ending includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all NTF files are NITF National Imagery Transmission Format image files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 9 KB to 250 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. NITF02. A common filename is i_3001a.ntf. These files are often associated with osapf, image, nitf, task, ricketts, hallam, shared and nitfs.
- 15% of all NTF files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The internal app name of NTF files is NEATO's MediaFACE Template Editor. The file contains several sections with names like Contents and SummaryInformation. A typical file size is 18 KB. Such files are related to cdfront, cdlabel, label and tray.
All other NTF files (35%) have different formats, such as Font descriptor, National Transfer Format Map and certificate. The category is notify, pscript, mail, templet or shop. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your NTF file!

an ntf database template file is a special file format by HCL and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with NTF files
- Associate the NTF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database template files. Because only the current version supports the latest NTF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the HCL manufacturer website after an available Notes update.
- To make sure that your NTF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NTF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
