Opening an NWS File
The NWS file type is primarily associated with Outlook Express.
What is an NWS file
- File structure: Each file contains a single newsgroup post. These files, along with other email-storing files like EML, use the "message/rfc822" format which means they are cross-compatible: it is possible to interchange their extensions and still open them via the same software. "Rfc822" is a content-type declaration indicating that the body of the file contains an encapsulated message with the RFC 822 syntax. This is a part of the MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) standard used for email messages. RFC 822 was superseded by RFC 2822.
- Compatible software: Most email client software can read and write NWS files, such as: Thunderbird and Outlook. Since the standard in which these files were written hasn't changed much, most stored messages as old as two decades can still be imported into newer versions of this software.
How to open NWS files
You need a suitable software like Outlook Express to open an NWS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NWS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NWS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

NWS file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the NWS files is as follows:
NWS is not a commonly used file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 45% of all NWS files start with the bytes Re crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. NWS files can be up to 2 MB in size, but are often around 8 KB - 320 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. with, Received: from, prod, HTTPS and eurprd. The file name Allegato Mail.nws or 1_Allegato Mail.nws is typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to mail and allegato.
- 15% of all NWS files use the same file format, which have the signature Path: . These files contain text and words, not binary data. Most of these files are 1 KB to 230 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Path, news, From and not-for-mail. These files can be linked to indicators, problem and sentra.
All other NWS files (40%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. DOC and From. These files sometimes refer to newsletter. Just click the "Choose your .nws file to view" button on this page to find out what your NWS file is.

How to solve problems with NWS files
- Associate the NWS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open mail newsgroup files. Because only the current version supports the latest NWS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Outlook Express update.
- To make sure that your NWS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NWS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
