All about OBD Files
The OBD file type is primarily associated with Binder.
What is an OBD file
- File structure: OBD files themselves were bundled OLE 2.0 objects, which included documents, spreadsheets, presentations and projects. These bundles were used for storage and organizational purposes, as well as easier project-wide data transportation.
- Usage: OBD were openable (and unbindable) in Office up until version 2003, via a downloadable extension. A special tool just for unbinding was available for download for a while after Binder was discontinued until it was discontinued as well.
- Related extensions: Other than OBD, Binder also used OBT files (Office Binder Template files) and OBZ files (Office Binder Wizard files).
How to open OBD files
You need a suitable software like Binder to open an OBD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OBD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OBD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert OBD files:
- Binder by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. OBD files are often referred to as Binder data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Oracle Forms (online help file) by OracleOracle Forms is software with an integrated development environment including an object navigator, property sheet, and code editor that uses PL/SQL, and is primarily designed to create data entry systems that access an Oracle database. The OBD file contains online help data. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Documentation, Oracle Forms on Wikipedia
OBD format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the OBD files comes to the following conclusion:
The OBD file ending is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in OBD files:
- 75% of all OBD files use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The app name of OBD files is Microsoft Office Binder, Microsoft Office Sammelmappe, Classeur Microsoft Office or Microsoft Office ÊÞÝÀÞ. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: 59850400-6664-101b-b21c-00aa004ba90b. The file contains several sections which are named like Binder, DocumentSummaryInformation, SummaryInformation, 1, HdrFtr, 2 and 3. The files are 86 KB to 5 MB in size, with a median of 620 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 20 years ago. Such files are related to hydelec, forspe, bsmec, classeur, agenda and item.
- 10% of all OBD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "OMBD" at the beginning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 2 MB to 28 MB in size, with a median of 11 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as OMBD.
All other OBD files (15%) have no uniform format, the following 3 formats can be found: Source. They are often associated with char. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your OBD file!

an obd document objects collection is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with OBD files
- Associate the OBD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open document objects collections. Because only the current version supports the latest OBD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Binder update.
- To make sure that your OBD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .OBD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
