Opening an ODF File

The ODF file type is primarily associated with OpenOffice Math.

ODFFile Extension ODF
File extension: ODF
File type:  mathematical equations file

What is an ODF file?

ODF files mostly belong to OpenOffice Math by Apache. ODF is one of the file extensions of an Open Document Format file. These are ZIP-compressed XML-based files for spreadsheets, charts, presentations, and word processing documents. They were developed with the aim of providing an open, XML-based file format specification for office applications.

File structure: Files with the ODF extension are specifically mathematical formula and equation files. Like the rest of the files in their family, they are XML-based, starting with a <document> root element. They can also appear as ZIP archives containing multiple files which can contain binary content and benefit from ZIP's lossless compression to reduce file size. The file itself is written with "separation of concerns" in mind - its content, styles, metadata, and application settings are separate XML files.</document>

<document>Compatibility: With the goal of the ISO-standardized Open Document Format being having an open format that's easily adopted by applications and standard usage methods, these files are readable by a huge variety of software on all of the main operating systems, without the need for conversion.</document>

<document>Related extensions: Other files in the Open Document Format include:</document>

  • <document>ODT (or FODT) for word processing,</document>
  • <document>ODS (or FODS) for spreadsheets,</document>
  • <document>ODP (or FODP) for presentations,</document>
  • <document>ODG (or FODG) for graphics.</document>

How to open ODF files

You need a suitable software like OpenOffice Math to open an ODF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ODF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ODF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ODF files:

  1. OpenOffice Math by Apache
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ODF files are often referred to as OpenOffice Math data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Battlezone (object definition file) by Activision
Battlezone is a first-person shooter (FPS) and real-time strategy (RTS) computer game, published by Activision, and developed for Microsoft Windows in 1998. In this game, the player is controlling everything on the battlefield from the first-person view - in the role of a commander of a mobile attack force. The ODF file is a game object definition file and is saved in a plain text format. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Game Manual, Battlezone on Wikipedia
  3. LibreOffice Math (mathematical equations file) by Document Foundation
Math formula editor, a part of the LibreOffice suite, is intended for inserting mathematical and scientific formulas in text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings. It can be used as a stand-alone application, or directly from within other LibreOffice components like Writer, Calc, Impress and Draw. The ODF file contains mathematical equations and is stored as compressed archive. This file type is based on the OASIS OpenDocument standard. This file format is classified as Data. an odf mathematical equations file is a special file format by Apache and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with ODF files

  • Associate the ODF file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open mathematical equations files. Because only the current version supports the latest ODF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Apache manufacturer website after an available OpenOffice Math update.
  • To make sure that your ODF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .ODF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
