What is an OFX file?

OFX files mostly belong to Microsoft Money by Microsoft. OFX (Open Financial Exchange) is a widely implemented, open and platform-independent standard for transferring financial information and transactions between client-server systems. It is a SGML based file with tags that describe values of properties. The current version is OFX 2.3, and is maintained by the OFX Consortium.
OFX is a data-stream format that stores data as XML, and was developed through a joint effort by Microsoft, Intuit and Checkfree. Their goal was to allow users of the web and popular financial to freely exchange financial data over the Internet. Released in 1997, OFX integrated features from Microsoft's Open Financial Connectivity, Intuit's OpenExchange and the banking protocols from Checkfree. OFX provides a proven and mature API for financial data and is in use in 7000+ financial institutions globally.
OFX files can be created by converting a CSV to OFX using freely available file converters. Financial programs that support the Open Financial Exchange standard will support creating OFX files by default, or allow exporting of financial data in OFX format.
Programs and platforms that support the OFX include Quicken, QuickBooks, Excel, GnuCash, Tally(ERP), Sage, Numbers, Money, Moneydance, and KMyMoney.
Individual organizations can extend the OFX standard after registering a unique PREFIX with the ofx.org.
Due to its wide implementation, OFX has associations with other file types and supports conversion across multiple related formats. Other files associated with OFX include QFX, QIF and CSV.

OFX file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the OFX files comes to the following conclusion:

The OFX file extension is quite common and is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 15% of all OFX files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. EXE and OFXHEADER. Often described as trans, transaction, cibc, txns, bradesco, history, sicoob or hist.
