Opening OWL Files
The OWL file type is primarily associated with Sublime.
What is an OWL file?
How to open an OWL file
You need a suitable software like Sublime to open an OWL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OWL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OWL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert OWL files:
- Sublime by Sublime
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. OWL files are often referred to as Sublime developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- C++ Builder (script) by EmbarcaderoC++ Builder is an integrated development environment that is optimized for building native applications using C++ programming language. Version 4.5 of Borland C++, a discontinued iteration of C++ Builder uses an OWL file to save a script written in Owl language. This file is stored in the \BC45\BIN folder. This file format is classified as Developer.
- Cloud Paks (ontology/mappings) by IBMCloud Paks is a cloud computing software for Red Hat environments. Data ontologies and data mappings used by Cloud Paks are saved in multiple OWL files written in Web Ontology Language. These files are then compressed into a ZIP archive which has OWL filename extension. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Web Ontology Language
- Protégé (biomedical data) by NIGMSProtégé is a cross-platform application used to edit ontology data saved in various formats. OWL is its default filename extension for data models written in Web Ontology Language. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Web Ontology Language
- WebSphere (transport classification data) by IBMWebSphere is a web server program for hosting Java applications. Its transport classification data is saved in an OWL file. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Web Ontology Language
OWL file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the OWL files:
The OWL file extension is quite widespread and mainly uses a defined OWL format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all OWL files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 230 KB in size and range from 9 KB to 45 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0"?>, xmlns, base, RDF xmlns, http://www.w3.org, purl and ontology. These files are often associated with ontology, fend, webprotege, pizza, foodon, model, quran, doid and onto.
- 3% of all OWL files start with the bytes @prefix crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 96 KB. The keywords @prefix owl: <http://www.w3.org/2002/07/owl#> , @prefix rdf: <http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#> , ontologies, http://www.semanticweb.org and @prefix xml are typical for these files.
The remaining 12% of all OWL files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. ZIP, .NET and Prefix. These files sometimes refer to data, ordo, mappings, covid, icpc, assignment, university or pathway. You can get all the details of your OWL file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .owl file to view" above.
Technical Data for OWL File Extension
an owl script is a special file format by Sublime and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with OWL files
- Associate the OWL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest OWL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Sublime manufacturer website after an available Sublime update.
- To make sure that your OWL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .OWL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
