What is an OWL file?

OWL files mostly belong to Sublime by Sublime. An OWL file contains data written in Web Ontology Language. Such data is usually written in XML-like syntax and used to describe taxonomies in software development, medicine, and other fields. Resource Description Framework (RDF) is the most popular variant of this language. WebSphere web server uses an OWL file written in this language to store its transport classifications. Cloud Paks cloud computing software uses OWL files containing data mappings compressed into a ZIP-compressed OWL archive. Protégé ontology data editing software saves data models in OWL files. How to open an OWL file

You need a suitable software like Sublime to open an OWL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. 3% of all OWL files start with the bytes @prefix crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 96 KB. The keywords @prefix owl: <http://www.w3.org/2002/07/owl#> , @prefix rdf: <http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#> , ontologies, http://www.semanticweb.org and @prefix xml are typical for these files.

The remaining 12% of all OWL files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. ZIP, .NET and Prefix.
