All about PAT Files

The PAT file type is primarily associated with Synology Assistant.

PATFile Extension PAT
File extension: PAT
File type:  data file

What is a PAT file?

PAT files mostly belong to Synology Assistant. A PAT file can refer to several different data types depending on its source. It is used as a firmware update file on Synology devices, where the file holds system update data for Synology DSM. Use the Synology Assistant to apply these updates. See more information at Synology DSM.
In another context, a PAT file is a Photoshop pattern file. This file stores design patterns that you can use in Adobe Photoshop to fill shapes or backgrounds.
The PAT extension is also used in these areas:
  • Korg Pa-Series: Contains sound patch data for keyboards. More details at Korg.
  • PCStitch Embroidery: Saves cross-stitch or embroidery patterns. See PCStitch for additional info.
  • CorelDRAW Color Palette: A zipped patch file that holds color data, usable in design projects. Visit CorelDRAW for details.
  • Gravis Ultrasound: Contains patch data for audio processing.
  • FilExt.com note: Each PAT file is created for a specific application. The file must be opened with its corresponding software, and the data inside is not interchangeable between different uses.

    How to open PAT files

You need a suitable software like Synology Assistant to open a PAT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PAT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PAT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

    PAT file format:

To view or edit PAT files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the PAT files produces the following result:

PAT is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The file formats most commonly found in PAT files are:

All other PAT files (61%) have different formats, the following 9 formats can be found: CorelDRAW Pattern, PCStich pattern, Gravis UltraSound GF1 patch, SNNS pattern definition, Black and White 2 paths data, GIMP Pattern and KPAT. Sometimes used for windows or mail. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PAT file!

a pat data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with PAT files

    • Associate the PAT file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest PAT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Synology Assistant update.
    • To make sure that your PAT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
    • Click here to open your .PAT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
