What is a PCL file

PCL files mostly belong to JetASM by OpenPCL. A PCL file is a print job that is saved in the Printer Command Language developed by Hewlett-Packard. It contains a sequence of PostScript-like commands representing a document and instructions on how a PCL-compatible printer should print the document. JetASM is HP's default program for viewing, assembling, or disassembling a PCL print job. OpenPCL can also read such documents. Another type of PCL file contains 2-dimensional art created with Pencil2D software. Its contents are saved as XML-encoded vector objects. PCL is also the filename extension of parcel data used by OpenVue options analysis and trading application.

How can I open a PCL file?

You need a suitable software like JetASM to open a PCL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PCL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PCL file directly in the browser:. • 35% of all PCL files belong to HP Printer Command Language. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 7 KB to 4 MB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. • 10% of all PCL files internally use the ZIP format, that is, a PCL file includes multiple compressed files. A typical number of included files is 1. File names inside are always o1.xls. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The file size is in the range of 2 KB to 55 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as xlsUT. The file name WG_OTL_Timecard_Details_Report_20180601.pcl or WG_OTL_Timecard_Details_Report_20180601 (1).pcl is characteristic of these files. These files are often associated with report, timecard, details and reconciliation.

All other PCL files (55%) have no uniform format, often, for example, Pencil project, XML, PDF, ORACLE and YORF.
