What is a PIF file

PIF files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. A PIF file contains program information specifying how Windows operating system should run a non-Windows (MS-DOS) program. Such a PIF file is similar to the LNK file on Windows. It serves as a shortcut which contains font information, memory allocation data, window type, and the path to an actual executable. PIF is also the filename extension of a vector image containing map projection information saved in Geographic Data Format (GDF). Manifold geographic information system can create and render such map projection information. macOS uses a kind of compressed archive saved in a PIF file.

How to open PIF files

You need a suitable software like Windows to open a PIF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. PIF file extension format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. • 55% of all PIF files internally utilize the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware).
