Opening a PIX File
The PIX file type is primarily associated with PCI Geomatica.
What is a PIX file?
These files can be found in several specialized fields:
- Geospatial Imaging: Used in formats like the PCIDSK image format. These files often include geographic metadata for mapping and remote sensing. For more details, see PCI Geomatics.
- Medical Imaging: Employed as a medical image file format. Programs such as ImageJ and even image editors like GIMP can handle these formats.
- 3D Texturing: Used as texture files in 3D applications; for instance, software like Unity uses PIX files to store texture data.
- Raster Graphics & Spectral Imaging: Some PIX files serve as general raster image files or include spectral data (such as CASI spectral images) processed by applications like ENVI.
FilExt.com notes: Unlike common image files, few people know that many PIX files also embed additional metadata — such as spatial coordinates or color and spectral details — which are essential for advanced analysis in their respective fields. To view or edit a PIX file correctly, it is important to use the application that originally handled its creation. If necessary, conversion tools can transform it into a more common image format without losing critical embedded data.
How to open a PIX file
You need a suitable software like PCI Geomatica to open a PIX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PIX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PIX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PIX files:
- PCI Geomatica
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PIX files are often referred to as PCI Geomatica raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

PIX format details:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the PIX files:
The file type with the extension 'PIX' includes very many different file formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 10% of all PIX files start with the bytes PCIDSK , which are crucial for this file format. The average file size is 54 MB with most files being between 150 KB and 230 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. PCIDSK, PACEV and Inc., Richmond Hill, Canada.
- 8% of all PIX files use the same file format, which have the signature 2A 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 03. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 100 bytes to 3 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The files contain the following words: 1.2.840.10008.1.2.1.
All other PIX files (82%) have no uniform format, the following 8 formats can be found: BRender PIX bitmap, Inset PIX bitmap and PABX Background bitmap. These files sometimes refer to casi, tablero, render, volks or girl. You can get all the details of your PIX file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .pix file to view this image" above.

a pix raster image file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PIX files
- Associate the PIX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open raster image files. Because only the current version supports the latest PIX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available PCI Geomatica update.
- To make sure that your PIX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PIX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
