Opening PLS Files
The PLS file type is primarily associated with Winamp.
What is a PLS file
Key details summarized by FilExt.com include:
How do you open PLS files?
You need a suitable software like Winamp to open a PLS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PLS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PLS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- Winamp
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PLS files are often referred to as Winamp audios because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

- Generic Playlist FileUsed by different programs as a playlist for audio files. Can also be used as a redirector for .OGG Vorbis files although this is a non-standard use. Use a text editor to create a .PLS file that contains a single line: the full URL to the .OGG file (e.g., MYAUDIO.PLS contains http://mysite.com/myaudio.ogg as its only entry). Use ASCII mode to upload the .PLS file and binary mode to upload the .OGG file. Be certain the server has application/ogg as the MIME type for the .OGG file extension and audio/x-scpls for the .PLS file extension. You can then link to the .PLS file with the following HTML code: <a href="myaudio.pls" type="audio/x-scpls">Play My Audio</a> The Mime types used with this association are: audio/x-scpls.

The Mime types used with this association are: application/pls+xml. This file format is classified as XML. Related links: RFC 4267, PLS 1.0
- Real MP3 Playlist
- ShoutcastShoutcast and Icecast use a modified form of http to deliver MP3 audio in real-time over a network. This is a popular and inexpensive way to deliver radio over the Internet. It is especially popular with small broadcasters, as it does not require the server to have a registered domain name, just an IP address. It can deliver a live stream or a playlist of recordings. On a Macintosh, you can tune into hundreds of these streams by clicking the radio tower button in iTunes. There are also several Shoutcast players for Windows, such as WinAmp. PLS file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the PLS files produces the following result:
PLS is not a common file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. The following file formats are most commonly found in PLS files:
- 70% of all PLS files are associated with WinAmp/SHOUTcast PlayList files, which internally utilize the well-known config format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 66 bytes to 700 bytes. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as File1, [playlist], http, NumberOfEntries=1, Title1 and Length1=-1. An example of a file name is listen.pls. Such PLS files store data about playlist, classic, kpbx and rock.
The remaining 30% of all PLS files are files with no common format. Just click the "Choose your .pls file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your PLS file is.

a pls audio playlist file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PLS files
- Associate the PLS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open audio playlist files. Because only the current version supports the latest PLS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Winamp update.
- To make sure that your PLS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PLS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
