The PMD file type is primarily associated with InDesign.
What is a PMD file?
How to open a PMD file
You need a suitable software like InDesign to open a PMD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PMD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PMD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PMD file format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the PMD files:
The PMD extension is very commonly found and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 90% of all PMD files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The internal app name of PMD files is PlanMaker, Rev. 670 or Microsoft Word. The globally unique identifier of this file type is 8a087491-5264-11d4-95f6-00a0cc3cca14 or 00020906-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains several sections with names like PageMaker and ObjectPool. The files are on average 830 KB in size and range from 170 KB to 14 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Files like these are about book, letter, card, page, deed, agreement, pages and sale.
- 3% of all PMD files start with the magic bytes 04 00 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 250 bytes with most files being between 140 bytes and 880 bytes in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as automat. Files like these have the following tags: truck, slot, paint, expensive, lightbox, driver and garage.
All other PMD files (7%) have different formats, often e.g. ZIP, JPG, JetDB, Pmd and vertex. Files like these are sometimes linked to english, paper, chap, form, maths, chapter, project, tatva or bill. If you want to find out what your PMD file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with PMD files
- Associate the PMD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open documents. Because only the current version supports the latest PMD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available InDesign update.
- To make sure that your PMD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PMD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
