All about POT Files
The POT file type is primarily associated with PowerPoint.
What is a POT file
Compatibility: POT is a binary file format, based on the Compound File Binary Format. Even though it is no longer the default, newer versions of PowerPoint can still read and write in the POT file format.
Legacy: Since version 2007, PowerPoint binary formats (including POT), have been replaced by new yipped XML-based Office Open XML format. These formats have an extension that ends with an "x" (eg. POTX). The benefits of the change include:
- Smaller file sizes - up to 75% smaller than comparable binary documents;
- security, through being able to identify and exclude executable macros and personal data;
- less chance to be corrupted than binary formats;
- easier interoperability for exchanging data among Microsoft and other business applications, all while maintaining backward compatibility.
Other associations: POT can also refer to a "portable object template", a format generated by the GNU gettext to streamline software localization and internationalization. These files can also appear as PO files.
How to open POT files
You need a suitable software like PowerPoint to open a POT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your POT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a POT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
