What is a PPSX file?

PPSX files mostly belong to Power Point by Microsoft. PPSX stands for PowerPoint slideshow XML-structured format. PPSX file format is used to share and view data files associated with the Microsoft PowerPoint software.

• Main Use: Microsoft PowerPoint software is a popular tool for the preparation of slideshows and presentations. The initial versions of PowerPoint used PPS files to store information across various pages contains a variety of data forms such as video, audio, text, animations, and pictures. Beginning with PowerPoint 2007, an updated version to PPS was released, called PPSX. Like PPS files, PPSX files are also meant to be shared with users who wish to directly view the slideshow rather than editing it. • Features: PPSX, unlike PPS, was developed embracing the Office Open XML (OOXML) format framework. Thus, PPSX files make use of XML and ZIP formatting for organizing and compressing the various parts of the presentation file by saving ZIP archives in structured sub-directories containing all the information in accordance with the XML structure.

How to open a PPSX file

You need a suitable software like Power Point to open a PPSX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. PPSX is a very commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined PPSX format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 98% of all PPSX files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one PPSX file. The average file count is 148 with most PPSX files containing between 65 - 240 compressed files. Common included file names are [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \docProps\thumbnail.jpeg, \ppt\_rels\presentation.xml.rels, \ppt\media\image1.png, \ppt\presProps.xml, \ppt\presentation.xml, \ppt\tableStyles.xml and \ppt\viewProps.xml. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are on average 6 MB in size and range from 420 KB to 43 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. [Content_Types].xml. These files are attributed to lecture, presentation, audio, unit, chapter, geometrija, sentation, nacrtna and unidad.
• 1% of all PPSX files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 26 MB with most files being between 8 MB and 100 MB in size.
