Opening a PRJ File
The PRJ file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS.
What is a PRJ file?
- Main Use: Microsoft Visual Basic is a programming language used by Microsoft Visual Studio for creating a software interface built around a simple graphical environment. Autodesk AutoCAD is a computer-aided design application used for multiple design purposes such as creating blueprints for buildings, flyovers and integrated circuits. Both Microsoft Visual Studio and Autodesk AutoCAD use PRJ files to save project information, settings and references to other files and resources used by the project. Advanced Integrated Multidimensional Modeling Software (also known as AIMMS) uses PRJ file format in Windows and Linux systems to save project data used in the creation of operations models. The saved information includes project settings other user-interface components such as menu items. Various other software also uses PRJ files to store project related data such as music, document, 3D image settings, locations of saved windows and other raw data.
- Other Uses: Different projections are used against geodetic datasets such as ESRI ArcGIS/ArcView shapefiles and Geo TIFF files. The projection definitions suitable for different geodetic datasets are saved in PRJ files. The data is the PRJ files is stored in the ASCII-notated WKT format. Open repositories of all PRJ projection definition files can be found on the web.
How do you open PRJ files?
You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open a PRJ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PRJ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PRJ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PRJ file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the PRJ files:
The PRJ file extension is quite widespread and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all PRJ files belong to Shapefile Projection metadata. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. PRJ files are between 380 bytes and 510 bytes in size. It is a modern file type. The keywords DATUM, GEOGCS, PROJCS, SPHEROID, PRIMEM, Greenwich, UNIT, Degree, 6378137, PROJECTION, 0174532925199433, 257222101 and Zone are typical for these files. These files can be linked to export, transparent, mosaic, group, shape, teren, zone, boundary, polygon, alearg and topo.
- 5% of all PRJ files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one PRJ file. A typical number of included files is 62. Customary file names are mimetype, \META-INF\file-version, \META-INF\metadata.json and \PROJECT\projectDescriptor.json. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. A typical file size is 78 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: mimetype, application/pgx-project+zipPK and META-INF/. Such files sometimes refer to fotobuch, album and hoch.
The remaining 35% of all PRJ files are different files with different signatures, such as Borland Turbo C Project, MATLAB Compiler Project, 3D Studio Project, MADE Project/game, My House Project, Clarion Project, UTF-8, XML, SQL, config, Proj and KPVQ. Files like these are sometimes linked to fotobuch, district, album, line, jalan, kopie or poly. You can get all the details of your PRJ file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .prj file to analyze" above.

a prj projected coordinate system file is a special file format by ESRI and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PRJ files
- Associate the PRJ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open projected coordinate system files. Because only the current version supports the latest PRJ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ESRI manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS update.
- To make sure that your PRJ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PRJ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
