What is a PS file?

PS files mostly belong to Illustrator by Adobe. PS filename extension is associated with 2D and 3D graphics (usually vector images) coded in PostScript page description language. PostScript was developed by Adobe as a programming language that can represent vector and raster graphics as binary data which may be sent directly to a LaserJet printer or a plotter. A typical PS file contains vector or raster graphics, text, page layout information, and color data which can be viewed with programs like Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, Preview, and Canvas. When a PS file is used to store vector drawings/images, the images can be scaled to any resolution without losing its picture quality. PS is also the filename extension of MPEG program stream, a container format for multiplexing (combining) video, audio, and metadata used in disk recording, HD-Video, and DVD applications. The video content in PS files are encoded as MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 video.

How to open a PS file

You need a suitable software like Illustrator to open a PS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PS format details:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the PS files comes to the following conclusion:

Files with the PS extension are quite widely used. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All other PS files (35%) have different formats, frequently e.g. Encapsulated PostScript, IMKH and DXBC. Tagged as color, shader, front, hydro, document, name, pipe or room. Just click the "Choose your .ps file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your PS file is.

a ps image or drawing is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with PS files

  • Associate the PS file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open image or drawings. Because only the current version supports the latest PS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Illustrator update.
  • To make sure that your PS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .PS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
