All about PSD Files
The PSD file type is primarily associated with Photoshop.
What is a PSD file?
How to open PSD files
You need a suitable software like Photoshop to open a PSD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PSD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PSD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- DESIGN II (general flowsheet) by WinSimDESIGN II is a dynamic process simulator for chemical and hydrocarbon processes. It may be used to model and simulate the refinement, refrigeration, treatment of ammonia, methanol, pipelines, and petrochemical facilities. The general flowsheet of DESIGN II is saved in a PSD file. This file format is classified as Data.
- GIMP (multi-layer image) by The GIMP TeamGIMP is a graphics design program with raster and vector graphics support. This program is compatible with Windows, Linux, and Mac, and it may be used to view, edit, or convert PSD multi-layer images. This file format is classified as Raster Image. - Periscope (definition) by PeriscopePeriscope was a software development tool that was used alongside Periscope Debugger boards to debug programs and device-drivers built for older DOS operating systems. It had symbol and source support for high-level programming languages. Periscope's debugger definition file had PSD filename extension. This file format is classified as Developer.
- Preview (multi-layer image) by ApplePreview is a MacOS software for viewing images and documents. It has native support for images stored in PSD format. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
PSD file format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the PSD files produces the following result:
PSD is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a defined PSD format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 90% of all PSD files belong to Adobe Photoshop image. The files are using the common file format PSD. It is the native image format of Adobe Photoshop that supports multiple image layers and various imaging options. It can contain graphics data of high quality up to 2 gigabytes in size. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 7 MB with most files being between 400 KB and 73 MB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The files contain the following words: 8BPS, 8BIM, " id="W5M0MpCehiHzreSzNTczkc9d"?>, <x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/", xmptk and <?xpacket begin=". These files are attributed to logo, template, pack, card, banner, business, print and cmyk.
- 1% of all PSD files store the data in the Mac2OSX file format. The Mac2OSX format is an AppleDouble format and originally used to store additional metadata on Unix systems. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. PSD files are between 170 bytes and 41 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Mac OS X, 8BPS8BIM, ATTR, apple and metadata. Files like these have the following tags: home.
All other PSD files (9%) have different formats, often, for example, JPG and ZIP. Tagged as back, design, image, beznzvu, page, chromium or front. Just click the "Choose your .psd file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your PSD file is.

a psd multi-layer image is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PSD files
- Associate the PSD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open multi-layer images. Because only the current version supports the latest PSD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Photoshop update.
- To make sure that your PSD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PSD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
