All about PSD Files

The PSD file type is primarily associated with Photoshop.

PSDFile Extension PSD
File extension: PSD
File type:  multi-layer image

What is a PSD file?

PSD files mostly belong to Photoshop by Adobe. PSD is the native file format used to save multi-layer image files created with Photoshop, a professional photo editing software. The contents of a PSD file are subdivided into various sections including the file header, color mode data, image resources, layer and mask information, and the actual image data. The header section of a PSD file contains information such as the file signature (8BPS), version, image dimensions in pixels, number of channels etc. The image resources section contains non-pixel information such as pen tool paths, resource IDs, and resource data size. A single PSD file may contain multiple images, text, layers, masks, and effects applied to the images in the file. Images with resolutions up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels can be saved in PSD format. PSD filename extension is also used by the general flowsheet file created by DESIGN II, a dynamic chemical process simulation software.

How to open PSD files

You need a suitable software like Photoshop to open a PSD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PSD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PSD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  1. Photoshop by Adobe
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PSD files are often referred to as Photoshop raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. DESIGN II (general flowsheet) by WinSim
DESIGN II is a dynamic process simulator for chemical and hydrocarbon processes. It may be used to model and simulate the refinement, refrigeration, treatment of ammonia, methanol, pipelines, and petrochemical facilities. The general flowsheet of DESIGN II is saved in a PSD file. This file format is classified as Data.
  3. GIMP (multi-layer image) by The GIMP Team
GIMP is a graphics design program with raster and vector graphics support. This program is compatible with Windows, Linux, and Mac, and it may be used to view, edit, or convert PSD multi-layer images. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: The Photoshop File Format
  4. Periscope (definition) by Periscope
Periscope was a software development tool that was used alongside Periscope Debugger boards to debug programs and device-drivers built for older DOS operating systems. It had symbol and source support for high-level programming languages. Periscope's debugger definition file had PSD filename extension. This file format is classified as Developer.
  5. Preview (multi-layer image) by Apple
Preview is a MacOS software for viewing images and documents. It has native support for images stored in PSD format. This file format is classified as Raster Image.

PSD file format details:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the PSD files produces the following result:

PSD is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a defined PSD format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All other PSD files (9%) have different formats, often, for example, JPG and ZIP. Tagged as back, design, image, beznzvu, page, chromium or front. Just click the "Choose your .psd file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your PSD file is.

a psd multi-layer image is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with PSD files

  • Associate the PSD file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open multi-layer images. Because only the current version supports the latest PSD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Photoshop update.
  • To make sure that your PSD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .PSD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
