What is a PWL file?

PWL files mostly belong to Windows 98 by Microsoft. A PWL file is a password list created by Windows 95 or 98 operating system. It contains up to 255 encrypted password entries (username, password, description) used for system, network, and online logon operations. Windows applications such as Internet Explorer used passwords saved in a PWL file is automatically used to perform logon operations on websites for which the "Remember Password" option was selected during a previous login session.

How to open PWL files

You need a suitable software like Windows 98 from Microsoft to open a PWL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the PWL files comes to the following conclusion:

PWL is rarely used as a file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 55% of all PWL files are Windows 98 passwords files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 680 bytes in size and range from 680 bytes to 960 bytes. This file type was primarily in use more than 20 years ago. A common filename is ADMINIST.PWL or KLAUSVON.PWL. These files are attributed to carlsaga, slicklar, pescaode and user, and often contain personal information.
• 5% of all PWL files are associated with Windows 95 passwords. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 600 bytes.
