What is a QT file?

QT files mostly belong to QuickTime by Apple. QT is one of the filename extensions used to save videos in QuickTime file format. A QT file is a media container that may include one or more MPEG-4 or H.264-encoded video, multichannel audio, text (e.g. subtitle) and metadata. QuickTime format is based on ISO base media file format which is also the basis for the MP4 format. As such, MP4 and QT files are interchangeable in QuickTime-only environments. The Internet Media type for QT files is video/quicktime. QT videos are playable with media players such as QuickTime, PowerDVD, and VLC.

How to open QT files

You need a suitable software like QuickTime to open a QT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your QT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a QT file directly in the browser:. 80% of all QT files are associated with QuickTime Movie files, which internally utilize the well-known MP4 format. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. hdrlavih8, strf(, AVI LIST4, LIST!, cvid, strlstrh@, vidscvid and RIFF. Files like these are sometimes connected to player and chap.
