What is an RM file

RM files mostly belong to RealPlayer by RealNetworks. RM is short for RealMedia; a multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. RM media container files typically contain video and/or audio content streamed over the Internet. The audio streams in the file may be compressed using audio codecs such as RealAudio and AC3 while the video content is usually H.263 or H.264-encoded. The file may also contain chunks such as an RMF file header, a data header, an index header, a file properties header and a content description header. The Internet media type used by RM media container files include video/x-pn-realvideo, audio/vnd.rn-realaudio, and application/vnd.rn-realmedia. Media players such as RealPlayer, VLC, and MPlayer may be used to play RM files. RM filename extension is also associated with malware executables which are masked as video or audio files. In early 2008 infected files with the RM extension started to spread on Symbian OS devices (e.g., Nokia 6600, 6630, and 6680).

How do you open RM files?

You need a suitable software like RealPlayer to open an RM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
