RM file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the RM files:
The RM file extension is not found very often and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 80% of all RM files are Real Media stream files. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 5 MB in size and range from 130 KB to 34 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. .RMF, MDPR, PROP, Audio Stream, audio/x-pn-realaudio and CONT. Files like these have the following tags: music, osol, nurse, track, giugno and sample.
- 2% of all RM files use the same file format, which have the signature .raý. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 1 MB to 7 MB in size, with a median of 7 MB.
All other RM files (18%) have different formats, the following 3 formats exist: rtsp. If you want to find out which format your RM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .rm file to play".

an rm video/audio stream is a special file format by RealNetworks and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RM files
- Associate the RM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open video/audio streams. Because only the current version supports the latest RM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the RealNetworks manufacturer website after an available RealPlayer update.
- To make sure that your RM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
