How to open an SBN file
You need a suitable software like ArcView from ESRI to open an SBN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SBN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SBN file directly in the browser:. SBN file format:
To view or edit SBN files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SBN files is as follows:
The SBN file extension is quite common and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 80% of all SBN files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 27 0A FF FF FE 70. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 980 bytes. The file type is old but is used even today. These files are attributed to nakveti, parcels, teren, boundary, areas, line, topo, landuse, points, nakve and poly.
- 4% of all SBN files start with the bytes 01 00 02 01 01 02 00, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 230 KB and 2 MB in size. The keywords #CN=someCA;OU=someOrgUnit;O=someOrg and 'CN=someSigner;OU=someOrgUnit;O=someOrg are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to apps.
All other SBN files (16%) have different formats, frequently e.g. hsqs. Tagged as rootfs, kern, transmission, electricity, indonesia, building, contours, existing, network, village, buffer, census, public, admin, point, clip or park. If you want to find out which format your SBN file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .sbn file to analyze".
