What is an SF file?

SF files mostly belong to Android Studio. A SF file can mean different things in different contexts.
For Android apps, an SF file is used as a digital signature file. It is produced by tools like Android Studio and jarsigner and contains a list of cryptographic checksums that verify the contents of a JAR archive (often found in the META-INF folder of an APK). How do you open SF files?

You need a suitable software like Android Studio to open an SF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the SF files produces the following result:

• 55% of all SF files are associated with JAR Signatures File. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 71 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Signature-Version: 1.0, SHA1-Digest-Manifest, Created-By: 1.0 (Android), Name: AndroidManifest.xml, X-Android-APK-Signed: 2 and SHA-256-Digest-Manifest. A common filename is CERT.SF or GOOGPLAY.SF. These files are attributed to bndltool, mozilla, androidk, facebook, testkey, android, gamemodp, androidd, apkeasyt, signfile, whatsapp and gamesir.
• 10% of all SF files are using the well-known EXE file format to store the data. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 73 KB to 390 KB in size. The files contain the following words: !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. Reconnect-.sf is a typical file name. Such files are related to chatid, cmdhelper, girlshare, aimbot, bullet, smooth, track, bymu and njaa.
