Opening an SGML File
The SGML file type is primarily associated with FrameMaker.
What is an SGML file?
- Main Usage: SGML files are document files which store data using the Standard Generalized Markup Language format. These files store data about the structure and attributes of documents. The extension was developed to provide a standardized means of sharing large documents. SGML files are stored as a simple text file and can be edited with a text editor program.
- Derivatives: SGML files are the standardized form of GML files, which were developed in the 1960s. Many markup formats have been derived from SGML, such as XML and HTML. These formats are similar to SGML files as they are also declarative, meaning they describe the structure and attributes of the document, without specifying how it should be processed.
How to open SGML files
You need a suitable software like FrameMaker to open an SGML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SGML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SGML file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SGML files:
- FrameMaker by Adobe
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SGML files are often referred to as FrameMaker simple text files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- WordPerfect (Standard Generalized Markup Language file) by CorelWordPerfect is a word processing software from Corel. The SGML format stores a structured document in Framemaker. It is written in the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). This file format is classified as Simple text file. SGML file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the SGML files comes to the following conclusion:
The SGML file extension is rather rarely used and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in SGML files are:
- 45% of all SGML files are EAD - Encoded Archival Description files, which are using the popular HTML file format. HTML is short for HyperText Markup Language. It is the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. SGML files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 2 KB - 180 KB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. The following keywords are characteristic: DOCTYPE, PUBLIC, title and DocBook. The following filename is common: tutorial.sgml. Such files are related to guide, user, supplicant, change and gmime.
- 25% of all SGML files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The average file size is 30 KB with most files being between 2 KB and 93 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, DOCTYPE doc PUBLIC, DTD XSEIF 1, PUBLIC "-//ERICSSON//DTD, XSEIF 1/FAD, <doc new-page-level="npl0", FAD 110 05 R5 and XSEIF_R5. These files are attributed to unit, support and radio.
The remaining 30% of all SGML files are different files with different signatures. The category is alternative, teama or output. If you want to find out which format your SGML file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .sgml file to view".

How to solve problems with SGML files
- Associate the SGML file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open standard generalized markup language files. Because only the current version supports the latest SGML file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available FrameMaker update.
- To make sure that your SGML file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SGML file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
