What is an SGML file?

SGML files mostly belong to FrameMaker by Adobe. The Standard Generalized Markup Language is an ISO Standard language and a descendant of IBM's Generalized Markup Language (GML). The standard describes how general markup languages should store data.

• Main Usage: SGML files are document files which store data using the Standard Generalized Markup Language format. These files store data about the structure and attributes of documents. The extension was developed to provide a standardized means of sharing large documents. SGML files are stored as a simple text file and can be edited with a text editor program.
• Derivatives: SGML files are the standardized form of GML files, which were developed in the 1960s. Many markup formats have been derived from SGML, such as XML and HTML. These formats are similar to SGML files as they are also declarative, meaning they describe the structure and attributes of the document, without specifying how it should be processed.

How to open SGML files

You need a suitable software like FrameMaker to open an SGML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SGML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SGML file directly in the browser:. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The average file size is 30 KB with most files being between 2 KB and 93 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, DOCTYPE doc PUBLIC, DTD XSEIF 1, PUBLIC "-//ERICSSON//DTD, XSEIF 1/FAD, <doc new-page-level="npl0", FAD 110 05 R5 and XSEIF_R5. These files are attributed to unit, support and radio.
