Opening SH Files
The SH file type is primarily associated with UNIX.
What is an SH file
- Unix Shell archive: These are files generated by the Shar application together with self-decompressing files and a script that carries instructions on how to uncompress the documents within. These files are created to be read and utilized on the Unix platform on the command line. Shar files sometimes utilize the SCHAR extension. Compatible programs that can open this file include ZipZag, Unshar, and WinRAR. SH files aren't automatically recognizable on Windows because it does not have an automatic inbuilt program to run it. Therefore the user is required to download a compatible program to run SH files such as Cygwin.
- Bash Shell script: A SH file is a script developed for Bash, a Linux based shell and command language. Bash scripts carry written instructions in the Bash language which can be executed by typing instructions on the command-line. Bash is a command language that took the place of Bourne Shell thus getting the title Bourne-again.
How do you open SH files?
You need a suitable software like UNIX to open an SH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SH file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SH files:
- UNIX by The Open Group
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SH files are often referred to as UNIX executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- NotePad++ (shell script) by Don HoNotePad++ is a text and source code editor developed by Don Ho. It is used to write different types of code, including shell scripts for Unix shells. A SH file is a shell script file for the Bourne shell other shells such as Thompson and Bash also use this extension. This file format is classified as Executable. - UNIX (shell script) by The Open GroupUNIX is a family of operating systems that mainly operate with a Command-Line Interface (CLI) while also having a Graphical User Interface (GUI). The CLI is based on a command-line interpreter called a shell. A SH file in Unix is a shell script file for the Bourne shell (other shells such as Thompson and Bash also use this extension). It is important to note that SH is also the format for a shell archive file created in Unix. This file format is classified as Executable. - ZipZag (shell archive) by Cristescu Gabriel ValentinZipZag is a file compression and archiving software developed by Cristescu Gabriel Valentin. The application has support for several archive formats, including SH. A SH file is a shell archive file created using the shar utility in Unix. It can also have the SHAR file extension. This file format is classified as Executable. Related links: Download ZipZag
SH file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the SH files produces the following result:
SH is a very widely used file extension. The file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all SH files are Linux/UNIX shell script files, which are based on the shell script file format. A shell script is a text file that contains shell commands for a UNIX-based operating system. The first line of such a text file is often #!/usr/bin/env or #!/bin/sh. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 2 KB in size and range from 190 bytes to 13 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. #!/bin/sh, #!/bin/bash, this and script. An example of a file name is install.sh. Files like these have the following tags: linux, setup, ddlc, start, keydbextract, macmillan, anaconda, broken, update and data.
- 8% of all SH files use the same file format, which have the signature 23 21. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. SH files are between 79 bytes and 2 KB in size. The files contain the following words: #!/system/bin/sh and bash. A usual file name is install-recovery.sh or backuptool.sh. Files like these are about recovery, wallet, synergy and init.
All other SH files (32%) have no uniform format, the following 6 formats exist: ELF and echo. The category is script, config, build, user, launch, server, copie, flash or sword. If you want to find out what your SH file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with SH files
- Associate the SH file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open shell archives. Because only the current version supports the latest SH file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the The Open Group manufacturer website after an available UNIX update.
- To make sure that your SH file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SH file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
