Opening an SHW File
The SHW file type is primarily associated with Presentations.
What is an SHW file?
- Main Usage: SHW files store presentations or slideshows. The data stored in these files can include text, images, and other media. The file can be used to view or edit a presentation within Corel Presentations or CorelDraw Graphics Suite X6. Alternatively, the file can be converted to a different presentation format that is compatible with other presentation software, or exported as a standalone executable file.
- Compatibility: Corel Presentations and CorelDraw Graphics Suite X6 are only available for the Microsoft Windows operating system. The SHW file format is not open source and is not compatible with other presentation software.
- Alternatives: SHW files are also used by Chamsys MagicQ for storing data about a light and media show. The program is used for concerts and stores settings, palettes, cues, and more in SHW files.
- Similar extensions: The SHW extension is similar to other formats which save presentation slides, such as ODT files used by the Apache OpenOffice suite, or PPTX files used by Microsoft PowerPoint.
How can I open an SHW file?
You need a suitable software like Presentations to open an SHW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SHW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SHW file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SHW file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the SHW files is as follows:
The SHW file extension is not common and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in SHW files are:
- 55% of all SHW files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The app name of SHW files is C\Corel\Suite8\Programs\PRWIN8.EXE or C\Program Files\WordPerfect Office 11\Programs\Prwin11.exe. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: 402efe62-1999-101b-99ae-04021c007002 or 4bf9d234-a519-465f-89d8-b346ed884087. The file contains several sections which are named like PerfectOffice_MAIN, PerfectOffice_OBJECTS, SlideShow and SummaryInformation. The average file size is 3 MB with most files being between 110 KB and 28 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today.
- 10% of all SHW files are based on the well-known WordPerfect file format. WordPerfect is a word processor now owned by Corel and has a long history that began in the 1980s. It may contain formatted text, tables, charts, drawn objects, and images. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 460 bytes in size and range from 460 bytes to 370 KB. The following filename is common: presenta.shw.
All other SHW files (35%) have no consistent format, the following 5 formats can be found: MagicQ Show, Harvard Graphics presentation and ETC Show. These files sometimes refer to show. If you want to find out what your SHW file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
