SMIFile Extension SMI
File extension: SMI
File type:  subtitle

What is an SMI file

SMI files mostly belong to Media Player by Microsoft. SMI files usually contain subtitles (closed captions) saved in SAMI Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange format. An SMI subtitle file contains subtitle, styling information, timestamps etc. used as closed captions during video playback. The contents of the file is written in HTML-like syntax and it may contain HTML elements such as H1 to H6 headers, sytle, img, i etc. SMI is also a filename extension for audiovisual presentation files stored in SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language). SMI presentation files are written in XML syntax and they contain references to media files and text used in the presentation. The structure of these SMI files is also similar to the structure of HTML files where the <head> tag contains metadata and the <body> contains structural information and visible content. Self-mounting disk image files created with the Disk Utility app on MacOS are also saved in SMI files.

How to open SMI files

You need a suitable software like Media Player to open an SMI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SMI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SMI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the SMI files:

SMI is one of the most common file extensions and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

The remaining 30% of all SMI files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, Lotus Smart Icon, XML and UTF-16 (LE).
