What is an SMI file
How to open SMI files
You need a suitable software like Media Player to open an SMI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SMI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SMI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SMI file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open SMI files, you need to determine the file format. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the SMI files:
SMI is one of the most common file extensions and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 50% of all SMI files are SAMI captions files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. SMI files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 110 bytes - 120 KB. It is a modern file type. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. lang, SAMIType, Name, SYNC Start, English, P class, <head>, <sami>, <sami><head><Title></Title><style type='text/css'><!--.en, <style type='text/css'><!-- and body. Files like these are about video, english, official, movie, movies, best, high and episode.
- 20% of all SMI files are associated with Siemens archived SMS messages. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 180 bytes to 190 bytes in size.
The remaining 30% of all SMI files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, Lotus Smart Icon, XML and UTF-16 (LE). Often described as rarbg, your, subtitle, dubbed, what, tutorial, season, excel, hindi, music or love. You can get all the details of your SMI file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .smi file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with SMI files
- Associate the SMI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open subtitles. Because only the current version supports the latest SMI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Media Player update.
- To make sure that your SMI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SMI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
