What is an SML file?

SML files mostly belong to Sublime Text by Sublime. SML filename extension is mainly associated with slideshow presentations written in SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language), a markup language for describing interactive slideshows that can be streamed in a web browser or played with RealPlayer. The contents of SML presentation files include the document's xml declaration, a !doctype declaration, and the <smil> element which is further subdivided into the <head> (metadata), and <body> (content) sections. The <body> of an SML presentation file is where the elements, transitions, effects, and hyperlinks to media files used in the presentation are stored. SML filename extension is also associated with the Smile data interchange format. Such SML files contain binary data serialized from the standard JSON data model. Simile, an object-based modeling and simulation software saves models and submodels in SML files. Source code written in Standard ML programming language are also stored in files with SML filename extension.

How to open an SML file

You need a suitable software like Sublime Text to open an SML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions.
