SPC file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the SPC files:
The SPC file extension is quite widespread and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all SPC files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The file contains sections that are named something like Contents, DataStorage1, DataStorageHeaderInfo, SummaryInformation, Version and NumberofSaved. The files are on average 26 KB in size and range from 15 KB to 36 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. A usual file name is File_20180601.spc. These files are often associated with sample, blank and peak.
- 8% of all SPC files have the same signature 00 4B. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 3 KB to 15 KB in size, with a median of 7 KB. Such SPC files store data about carob.
All other SPC files (72%) have different formats, often e.g. Super Famicon/Super NES audio dump, Spectrum 512 compressed/smooshed bitmap, Crimson Editor language specification and CPS. Often described as here, chara, spectrum, text, chap or game. If you want to find out what your SPC file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with SPC files
- Associate the SPC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open soundtracks. Because only the current version supports the latest SPC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Radionomy manufacturer website after an available Winamp update.
- To make sure that your SPC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
