Opening SPRITE Files
The SPRITE file type is primarily associated with Scratch.
What is an SPRITE file
How to open SPRITE files
You need a suitable software like Scratch to open an SPRITE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SPRITE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SPRITE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SPRITE files:
- Scratch by MIT
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SPRITE files are often referred to as Scratch raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Archimedes (bitmap) by AcornArchimedes was a family of 32-bit personal computers that used RISC operating systems. The RISC OS that ran on Archimedes PCs stored bitmaps in SPRITE files. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: RISC OS
- Sizzler (animation) by PsytronikSizzler is an arcade-style video game where a robot, like its developers, tries to create its own C64 game. Hence, it roams its developer's office collecting art, code, and music required to build the game while avoiding deadly enemy sprites. Animations used in Sizzler are stored in SPRITE files. This file format is classified as Game.
- SuperTux (sprite) by SuperTux Development TeamSuperTux is an open-source jump and run sidescroller video game featuring Tux, the official mascot of the Linux kernel as its main character. Sprites used in SuperTux are stored in text-based SPRITE files. This file format is classified as Game.
SPRITE format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SPRITE files is as follows:
An SPRITE file does not have a uniform file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all SPRITE files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 700 bytes in size and range from 430 bytes to 1 KB. The file type is very recent.
- 15% of all SPRITE files start with the bytes SP crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 1 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as SPa1. A usual file name is amn_rune.sprite. These files can be linked to rune, background, lowend, horadriccube, expanded, stash and edit.
All other SPRITE files (70%) have no consistent format, such as SuperTux Sprite, config, XML, SpA and ObjS. Sometimes used for left, note, down, base, explosion, cuphead, attack, button, asset or charm. If you want to find out which format your SPRITE file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .sprite file to analyze".

How to solve problems with SPRITE files
- Associate the SPRITE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open sprites. Because only the current version supports the latest SPRITE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the MIT manufacturer website after an available Scratch update.
- To make sure that your SPRITE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SPRITE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
