What is an SQZ file?

SQZ files mostly belong to Squeeze by Sorenson Media. SQZ is a file format created by Sorenson Media's Squeeze software to assist in compressing and archiving video files. Squeeze is a variable bit rate compression tool that converts video files into several formats such as WMV, FLV, WEBM, etc that are optimized for the video and audio quality.

  • Features: SQZ files are project files used by Squeeze which include the video file encoding settings along with the file format conversion history. These files can also enable video conversion with the help of features on the Squeeze cloud server. While the SQZ files are embedded with references to imported video files they do not contain the source video file itself. The data in the SQZ file is saved in XML format. It contains an archive header and numerous file headers. Following each header and its corresponding block, one byte is allocated for the size and type of the next block in the sequence. The normal header of the file has one byte of bitmapped flags, header checksum, and file properties. Squeeze software can be used to open SQZ files on computers running Windows or Mac OS operating systems.
  • Other Uses: SQZ files are also associated with a Windows-only genealogy tool called The Master Genealogist. Version earlier than 6.0 of the program use the SQZ file format for backing up the database, documentation, and configuration data of project files in a compressed ZIP format.

How can I open an SQZ file?

You need a suitable software like Squeeze to open an SQZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SQZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SQZ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
