What is an STK file?

STK files mostly belong to STK Viewer. An STK file is not a single, uniform format. It is a file extension used in different fields to store various kinds of data.

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the STK files:

An STK file is used by many programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

8% of all STK files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "EA 11 AF C7 08 C5 1F 95 7F C8 38 56 EA 7D 5D 41" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 10 MB in size and range from 340 KB to 12 MB. Examples of file names are -01.stk.
6% of all STK files are MetaMorph Stack files, which are based on the TIFF file format. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. STK files are between 7 MB and 60 MB in size. Files like these are about brightfieldafm and fitc.

All other STK files (86%) have no consistent format, the following 5 formats can be found: Stockholm format and UTF-16 (LE). Tagged as active, spac, flevol, mytel, mzkfastconnect, technique, internet, ground, smoke, stock, bill, eswh or plug.
