Opening an STW File
The STW file type is primarily associated with Statistica.
What is an STW file?
For many users, these files are Statistica workbooks that use the Microsoft Compound file format to store structured data and analysis. They often contain several embedded data streams that hold calculations, charts, and statistical results.
Other STW files are StarWriter documents. These are created by Apache OpenOffice Writer (also known as StarOffice Writer) and are stored inside a ZIP container as part of the OpenDocument Text format. You can find more information at OpenOffice.
A few files in this group are Service Technician Work Reports that use XML formatting to structure service log details, while a smaller group is linked to the ScriptThing Word Processor for word processing tasks.
How to open an STW file
You need a suitable software like Statistica to open an STW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your STW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a STW file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

STW file format:
To view or edit STW files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the STW files looks like this:
STW is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all STW files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). STW files contain an app name STATISTICA or Statistica. The globally unique identifier of this file type is c9e28008-3d45-11d4-9ff4-00c04fa0d540. The file contains sections Contents, Embedding 1, Embedding 2, SummaryInformation, Embedding 5, Embedding 3, Embedding 4, Embedding 8, Embedding 10, Embedding 12, Embedding 6, Embedding 7, Embedding 11, Embedding 13, Embedding 14, Embedding 18, Embedding 19, Embedding 20, Embedding 9, Embedding 15 and Embedding 16. STW files are between 60 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The following filename is common: Workbook1.stw. Such STW files store data about analyses and data.
- 20% of all STW files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are combined and compressed into one STW file. Such a ZIP file contains 16 to 18 files. File names inside are always content.xml, layout-cache, meta.xml, mimetype, settings.xml, styles.xml, \Configurations2\, \Configurations2\accelerator\current.xml, \Configurations2\floater\, \Configurations2\images\, \Configurations2\images\Bitmaps\, \Configurations2\menubar\, \Configurations2\popupmenu\, \Configurations2\progressbar\, \Configurations2\statusbar\, \Configurations2\toolbar\, \Configurations2\toolpanel\, \META-INF\manifest.xml and \Thumbnails\thumbnail.png. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 14 KB to 54 KB. The keywords mimetypeapplication/vnd.sun.xml.writerPK, Configurations2/accelerator/current.xml and Configurations2/floater/PK are typical for these files.
All other STW files (20%) have different formats. You can get all the details of your STW file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .stw file to view this image" above.

an stw document file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with STW files
- Associate the STW file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open document files. Because only the current version supports the latest STW file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Statistica update.
- To make sure that your STW file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .STW file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
