Opening an SVG File
The SVG file type is primarily associated with Illustrator.
What is an SVG file?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<svg width="400" height="400" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg">
<circle cx="150" cy="150" r="75" fill="#FF0000" />
</svg>
Designers can optionally include base64-encoded raster image data (such as PNG and JPG in an SVG file. All modern browsers and vector graphics editors support SVG format. Video games such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty use a different SVG file format to store a user's progress in order to resume the game at a later time.
How to open SVG files
You need a suitable software like Illustrator to open an SVG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SVG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SVG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SVG file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the SVG files comes to the following conclusion:
The SVG file extension is quite widespread and mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 90% of all SVG files are Scalable Vector Graphics files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are often between 1 KB and 340 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as UTF-8, xmlns, svg version, standalone, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC, PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD, http://www.w3.org/2000/svg and DTD SVG 1. Such files are related to logo, icon, skype, breadboard, icons, diagram, regular, webfont and image.
- 1% of all SVG files use the same file format, which have the signature CD 01 00 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 210 KB in size and range from 180 KB to 280 KB. The files contain the following words: trainer. The following filename is common: trainer.svg.
All other SVG files (9%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. Scalable Vector Graphics, Mac2OSX, PNG and XML. These files sometimes refer to vector, flag, page, search, black or card. If you want to find out which format your SVG file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .svg file to view".

an svg image is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SVG files
- Associate the SVG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest SVG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Illustrator update.
- To make sure that your SVG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SVG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
