What is an SVG file?

SVG files mostly belong to Illustrator by Adobe. SVG files are usually animated or static vector images. These images are written in the XML-based Scalable Vector Graphics markup language which is used to describe 2D graphics. The graphics in SVG files are defined using basic shapes such as rectangles, ellipses, circles, paths, clip-paths, lines, polylines, color, effects, gradients, links, text, animation etc. For example, the contents of an SVG file containing a red circle may look as follows:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<svg width="400" height="400" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg">
<circle cx="150" cy="150" r="75" fill="#FF0000" />
</svg>

Designers can optionally include base64-encoded raster image data (such as PNG and JPG in an SVG file. All modern browsers and vector graphics editors support SVG format. Video games such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty use a different SVG file format to store a user's progress in order to resume the game at a later time.

How to open SVG files

You need a suitable software like Illustrator to open an SVG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SVG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SVG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  1. Illustrator by Adobe
    See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SVG files are often referred to as Illustrator vector images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Active Backup Expert (project) by OrionSoftLab
    Active Backup Expert is a discontinued file backup software. The SVG files created by Active Backup Expert were project files containing wildcards and paths to files which the program will backup. This file format is classified as Data.
  3. Call of Duty (saved game) by Activision
    Call of Duty is a series of first-person shooter video games available for mobile, PC, and console platforms. The earliest versions of Word saved their glossary backup in SVG files. Modern versions of the program do not used this format. This file format is classified as Backup.

SVG file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the SVG files comes to the following conclusion:

The SVG file extension is quite widespread and mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All other SVG files (9%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. Scalable Vector Graphics, Mac2OSX, PNG and XML. These files sometimes refer to vector, flag, page, search, black or card. If you want to find out which format your SVG file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .svg file to view".

an svg image is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with SVG files

  • Associate the SVG file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest SVG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Illustrator update.
  • To make sure that your SVG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .SVG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
