What is an SWF file?

SWF files mostly belong to Flash Player by Adobe. SWF (pronounced "swiff") is a Flash file format mainly used to distribute interactive content on the web. An SWF file may contain audio, video, 2D/3D animations, vector graphics, raster graphics, or mini games written with ActionScript. Shaders used in STR 3D models or animation are typically expressed in Adobe Graphics Assembly Language (AGAL). Flash media format uses various filename extensions but SWF is specifically used to store compiled and published Flash content. Flash (by Adobe) can no longer edit SWF files after they are published. Web browsers may play SWF files with Flash Player plugin or they may be played locally with supported media players such as Flash Player. SWF files are typically generated from Adobe products such as Flash and InDesign. This file format was originally developed by Macromedia for its Shockwave technology and it uses application/vnd.adobe.flash-movie mime type.

How to open an SWF file

You need a suitable software like Flash Player to open an SWF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SWF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SWF file directly in the browser:.
