Opening an SWF File
The SWF file type is primarily associated with Flash Player.
What is an SWF file?
How to open an SWF file
You need a suitable software like Flash Player to open an SWF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SWF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SWF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- Flash Player by Adobe
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SWF files are often referred to as Flash Player videos because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Elmedia (movie) by EltimaElmedia (formerly SWF & FLV Player) is an all-purpose multimedia player and streaming application for MacOS devices. Elmedia can play various audio, video, and rich media files formats such as FLV, SWF, MP4, and MP3. This file format is classified as Video. Related links: SWF, Adobe Flash
- Sidewinder (profile activator settings) by MicrosoftSideWinder was a Windows software for configuring SideWinder video game controllers. The program used an SWF file to define the profile activator settings of a SideWinder game controller. A profile is a set of programmed game actions and settings that affect how your controller behaves in a game. This file format is classified as Game.
SWF file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the SWF files:
The SWF extension is very commonly used. This SWF file itself is among the most popular common file types and contains well-defined data in an established structure that can be read by various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 70% of all SWF files are associated with Macromedia Flash Player Compressed Movie files, which internally utilize the well-known Flash format. A ShockWave Flash file contains an outdated Macromedia/Adobe Flash Player compressed movie. Adobe strongly recommends all users immediately uninstall the Flash Player to help protect their systems. They consist of unreadable binary data. SWF files can be up to 4 GB in size, but are often around 16 KB - 13 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. Such files sometimes refer to cropper, easyvcw, game, woman, city, planning, flash and player.
- 25% of all SWF files belong to Macromedia Flash Player Movie. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 1 MB. Such files sometimes refer to movie, animation, happy, albinoblacksheep, intro, video, scoobydoo, creambee and djloehr.
All other SWF files (5%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. ZWS and NTFS. Tagged as page, recovered, missing, mario, play or chapter. You can get all the details of your SWF file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .swf file to play" above.

an swf movie is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SWF files
- Associate the SWF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open movies. Because only the current version supports the latest SWF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Flash Player update.
- To make sure that your SWF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SWF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
