Opening TGZ Files
The TGZ file type is primarily associated with Gzip.
What is a TGZ file
- TAR Files are several files or folders compressed into an archive much smaller in size, without changing information such as the user permission or modification dates the files may contain.
- GZIP Files are compressed using the GZIP format, which is based on the DEFLATE encoding algorithm and developed by Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler.
TGZ extension is mainly used to store information and data for installation packages on several Linux distributions, while the TAR.GZ extension is used for archives. Adoption: TGZ files are mostly used on Unix and Linux-based systems, however the files can be read, opened and extracted throughout most operating systems using different compressing and/or decompressing utilities. You can read TGZ files on MacOS, Windows, Linux and Android-based systems using software like Zipeg, WinRAR, File Viewer etc.
How can I open a TGZ file?
You need a suitable software like Gzip to open a TGZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TGZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TGZ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TGZ files:
- Gzip by Free Software Foundation
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TGZ files are often referred to as Gzip compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- PeaZip (compressed archive file) by Giorgio TaniPeaZip is an open-source file compression and archiving software by individual developer Giorgio Tani. The archiver supports several formats, including TCX. The TCX file format stores files that are first archived using tar and then compressed with gzip. This file format is classified as Compressed. TGZ file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the TGZ files produces the following result:
You will often come across the TGZ file type. This predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 90% of all TGZ files store the data in the GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. TGZ files can be up to 16 GB in size, but are often around 6 KB - 380 MB. The file type is relatively new. Such files sometimes refer to global, images, python, dump, takeout, fasta, analytics, store and logs.
All other TGZ files (10%) have no consistent format. Often described as debug, gsslabs, kafka, silva, data or esxi. You can get all the details of your TGZ file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .tgz file to view" above.

a tgz compressed archive file is a special file format by Free Software Foundation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TGZ files
- Associate the TGZ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest TGZ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Free Software Foundation manufacturer website after an available Gzip update.
- To make sure that your TGZ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TGZ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
