What is a THM file?

THM files mostly belong to ACDSee Photo Studio by ACD. THM is the filename extension of thumbnail files used by programs such as Picture Publisher and PhotoMagic. Digital camcorders may also use THM files to store thumbnails of videos and images in their media gallery. A thumbnail is a low resolution image used to display a preview of a larger image or video file in a media catalog/gallery. The thumbnail of an image contains a smaller, low resolution copy of the image while the thumbnail of a video file contains a single frame (snapshot) from the video. Most desktop operating systems are able to display such thumbnails in their file manager. The THM files created by some camcorders are actually JPG files, so you can view such files with standard image processing software. OpenOffice productivity software suite uses a different THM format to store configuration data.

How to open a THM file

You need a suitable software like ACDSee Photo Studio to open a THM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your THM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a THM file directly in the browser:. Older Java-based Sony Ericsson mobile phones used themes saved in THM format. This file format is classified as Page Layout.

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the THM files:

THM is a very commonly used file extension and mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

80% of all THM files save the data in JPG file format. JPEG is the standard image format for lossy and compressed image data. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. Most of these files are 3 KB to 18 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: SONY. Such files sometimes refer to gopr, norm, ydxj, virb, grafham, water, gedc, movie, apdc, fimi and pict.
10% of all THM files are using the well-known MP4 file format to store the data. MP4 is a multimedia container format used to store video and audio and allows streaming over the Internet. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. THM files are between 1 MB and 41 MB in size. The keywords mdat, ftypmp42, mp41isom, Fuuid\, *6.3.9651.0 (winbluephone_sign.150406-1430), avc1isom and ftypavc1 are typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: cinemagraph.

All other THM files (10%) have no consistent format, the following 4 formats exist: StarOffice Gallery theme and Theme. How to solve problems with THM files

Associate the THM file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open thumbnails. Because only the current version supports the latest THM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ACD manufacturer website after an available ACDSee Photo Studio update.
To make sure that your THM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
