What is a TIFF file?

TIFF files mostly belong to Photoshop by Adobe. TIFF is an image container file format that is mainly used to store high resolution, layered or multi-page images saved in various formats. The image data in a TIFF may be uncompressed, compressed with a lossless compression standard such as LZW, or the image may be encoded using lossy compression standards such as JPEG. TIFF format may be used to store raster and vector graphics. It can store low to high resolution bi-level (black and white), grayscale, indexed palette color, and RGB color images. TIFF is mainly used to store graphics in word processing, OCR, faxing, and scanning applications. Geographical Information Systems such as QGIS and ArcGIS also use GeoTIFF, a variant of TIFF format to save raster graphics and georeferencing data. Standard 32-bit TIFF images with the 4GB size limit are also used to store microscopic data in the life sciences.

How to open TIFF files

You need a suitable software like Photoshop to open a TIFF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TIFF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TIFF file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. The TIFF extension is quite commonly used. The file itself covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

50% of all TIFF files are Tagged Image File Format Bitmap files, which are based on the TIFF file format. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 18 KB and 35 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. These files are often associated with blob, chromium, image, esaf and vipi.
30% of all TIFF files are OME-TIFF bitmap files, which are using the popular TIFF file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 8 KB to 33 MB. These files are often associated with graphic, pasted, preview, well, leviathan and stage.

The remaining 20% of all TIFF files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. HTML and JPG. Files like these are sometimes linked to orgchromium, marathon, vtitfw, vtltfw, local, login or conv.
