All about TR Files
The TR file type is primarily associated with Tally ERP 9.
What is a TR file
For example, some TR files are used as exam results or transcript reports (also known as Tabulation Register Files). These files may hold student scores and related data and are used by exam management systems such as those from Ruhsraj or Tally ERP 9.
Other TR files serve as network simulation trace files. They record the details of simulation runs (such as routing decisions, packet transfers, and network events) and are used by simulation tools like ns-3 (ns-3 Project), ns-2, or SUMO (SUMO).
There are additional, less common uses:
- CAD Translation: Files that store Parasolid CAD translation data from applications like Trados Studio (Trados Studio).
- Translation Data: Files holding language or localization entries used in environments such as GNOME (GNOME).
- Ebook Format: Files used to distribute ebooks, for example by the TomeRaider system (TomeRaider).
- Data Logs & Archives: Some TR files are temperature logs, printer data files, or even compressed XML archives (openable with tools like 7-Zip or FreeArc).
- Executable/Temporary Data: On rare occasions, they may be Windows executables or temporary files.
The file’s internal structure is defined by its originating software. To decide how to view it, check its content with a text editor for clues such as XML tags, plain text headers, or binary signatures.
FilExt.com note: Knowing the file’s origin is crucial to selecting the right tool for opening and editing it.

TR file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the TR files:
You will often come across the TR file type. This includes many different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 10% of all TR files start with the bytes TABULATION REGISTER FOR THE , which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. TR files can be up to 190 KB in size, but are often around 2 KB - 76 KB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The files contain the following words: DATE, INSTT, NAME, TABULATION REGISTER, COLLEGE, PART, TABULATION REGISTER FOR THE B, MAIN, B.SC. NURSING, PHARMACY and EXAM. APR.-2021. Such TR files store data about result, year and exam.
- 10% of all TR files start with the magic bytes 0C 0D 0D 0A 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. TR files can be up to 710 KB in size, but are often around 5 KB - 260 KB. The keywords TECH, CIVIL ENG, SEMESTER and EXAM are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are MKX1310.TR. Files like these are sometimes connected to btech and back.
All other TR files (80%) have no consistent format, such as TomeRaider e-book/document, UTF-16 (LE), ZIP, FreeArc, KJMJRM and MODEL. The category is trace, delay, qlen, assignment, assembly, drawings, simple or mbps. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your TR file!
