What is a VAT file?

VAT files mostly belong to Intervat. VAT files can serve two distinct purposes.
For the primary use, these files contain a tax declaration archive for Belgian VAT filings. This type is built as a ZIP archive that holds an XML tax document produced by Intervat.
In another use, VAT files are plain XML files that act as authentication tokens in the Voltage SecureFile system.
Details:

Tax Document Archive: The file is compressed using ZIP and includes XML data detailing tax declarations.

Authentication Token: The file contains a plain XML structure carrying voltage authentication information.

Suggestions:

If the file is a ZIP archive, use a common ZIP tool to extract the XML content and open it with an XML viewer or text editor.

For authentication tokens, use the specialized Voltage SecureFile application.

How do you open VAT files?

You need a suitable software like Intervat to open a VAT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VAT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VAT file directly in the browser:. VAT file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the VAT files is as follows:

The file type with the extension 'VAT' is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 65% of all VAT files use ZIP compression, the VAT file contains a number of compressed files. Primarily 1 to 6 files are included. File names are e.g. TvaList.xml. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. VAT files are between 580 bytes and 810 bytes in size. The files contain the following words: TvaList.xml. Files like these have the following tags: consignment, encoded, screen, data, intervat, trilogiq and lahaag.
• 9% of all VAT files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 420 bytes in size and range from 400 bytes to 430 bytes. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <vs:response xmlns:vs="http://www.voltage.com/xmlns/vspv1" code="101" message="Token Follows">, header, jMTI, vdEJlZm, JlBA, MBoMCW and QmVmb. Examples of file names are token.vat.
