Video CD Disc Image: This file is a mirror of a Video CD. It contains tracks for video and audio arranged as on an optical disc. Programs like VLC media player or tools such as VCDGear can open these files so you can play the video without needing the physical disc.

Value Change Dump (VCD): In another use, the file stores digital simulation data. It logs changes in electronic signal levels over time and is used in circuit design and debugging. Simulation tools like GTKWave, GHDL, or platforms like Wokwi read these text-based dumps. You can tell this type apart by its listing of time stamps and signal transitions.

Other less common uses include Valve animation files for Source2 projects and Visual CADD drawing files used in specialized design software. To decide which kind you have, try opening the file in a media player; if the content doesn’t seem video-related, inspect it with a text editor to see if it contains simulation dump data.

How can I open a VCD file?

You need a suitable software like VLC/GTKWave to open a VCD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
