What is a VFD file?

VFD files mostly belong to Virtual PC by Microsoft. A VFD file is a virtual floppy disk image that emulates a physical disk in a virtual machine created with Virtual PC system virtualization software. A VFD disk image uses the same FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32 file system used by MS-DOS. When a virtual machine writes data to the hard disk, Virtual PC redirects such write streams to a VFD file instead of a physical disk mounted on a host computer. Virtual PC has been superseded by Hyper-V virtualization software.

How can I open a VFD file?

You need a suitable software like Virtual PC from Microsoft to open a VFD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VFD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VFD file directly in the browser:. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. VFD is seldom used as a file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 40% of all VFD files have the same signature EB 3C 90. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 1 MB to 2 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. • 10% of all VFD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "URC" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters.
