What is a VGM file?

VGM files mostly belong to VGMPlay. VGM Files are data files that store video game music commands. They do not contain full audio recordings; instead, they hold a sequence of instructions for emulated sound chips to play tunes. This design preserves how vintage systems produced sound.
How It Works:
When a VGM file is played, the software reads the command list much like MIDI data. These commands determine which notes, effects, and timing to use, thereby recreating original game music.

  • Purpose: Archive and playback video game music.
  • Usage: Used for chiptune music collections and game audio preservation.
  • Playback: Requires specific software like VGMPlay to emulate original sound hardware.
  • Format: Recognized as a chiptune music file format.
