What is a VIS file

VIS files mostly belong to Ren'Py. A VIS file extension is not tied to a single format. Instead, VIS files serve different roles based on their origin. The largest group is used as a game save data file in visual adventure titles created with Ren'Py. These files store progress and game settings and are best accessed with the Ren'Py engine (Ren'Py official site).
Some VIS files are design files from Visily. They hold layout and project details and should be opened in the Visily application (Visily).
Other notable uses include:

How can I open a VIS file?

You need a suitable software like Ren'Py to open a VIS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open VIS files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. The VIS file extension is used very often and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 75% of all VIS files start with the magic bytes VIS3, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 330 MB in size and range from 37 MB to 670 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The files contain the following words: VIS3, 28~43fzf948=f and gf13a2. The following filename is common: Milftoon Drama.vis or load.vis. Files like these have the following tags: milftoon, drama, industries, cockwork, adventures, data, things, four and last.
• 2% of all VIS files are based on the well-known XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The file size is in the range of 4 KB to 1 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0", encoding and model.
