What is a WRI file?

WRI files mostly belong to WordPad by Microsoft. WRI is the filename extension of a text document used to distribute README files containing an application's documentation. This file's content is written in Rich Text Format. For this reason, it can be read and edited with a word processor or text editor such as WordPad or Notepad. Another type of WRI file is a document created by the discontinued Write word processor for Windows. Write has been replaced by WordPad which doesn't support WRI format.

How to open a WRI file

You need a suitable software like WordPad to open a WRI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WRI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WRI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  2. Write (text document) by Microsoft
Write is a discontinued word processing application for Windows desktop. It uses a WRI file to store a text document. This file format is classified as Page Layout.

WRI file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the WRI files:

The WRI file extension is not found very often and is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in WRI files:

The remaining 44% of all WRI files are files with no common format, often, for example, RTF. These files sometimes refer to read, list or support. Just click the "Choose your .wri file to view" button on this page to find out what your WRI file is.

How to solve problems with WRI files

  • Associate the WRI file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open text documents. Because only the current version supports the latest WRI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available WordPad update.
  • To make sure that your WRI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
