All about XDR Files
The XDR file type is primarily associated with BizTalk Server.
What is an XDR file?
How to open XDR files
You need a suitable software like BizTalk Server to open an XDR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XDR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XDR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XDR files:
- BizTalk Server by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XDR files are often referred to as BizTalk Server settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- IDL software (external data representation file) by L3Harris GeospatialIDL software is an Interactive Data Language visualization software developed by L3Harris Geospatial to provide advanced visualization and analytical tools for solving different types of problems. It is a cross-platform software and technology that provides the comprehensive computing environment to extract meaningful visualizations from complex numerical data. The XDR file is created in external data representation format, where all binary data is written using a standard (canonical) representation. This file format is classified as Data. XDR file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open XDR files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the XDR files is as follows:
The XDR file extension is not found very often and includes very many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all XDR files are XML-Data Reduced data files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 160 KB. The files contain the following words: xmlns, schemas-microsoft-com, xml-data, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> and <Schema name. An example of a file name is Openshipments.xdr.
- 10% of all XDR files start with the bytes 53 52 00 crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 10 KB to 870 KB in size, with a median of 160 KB.
All other XDR files (75%) have no consistent format. These files sometimes refer to msub, ledger, bucket, unknown, volume, uapps, base or data. Just click the "Choose your .xdr file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your XDR file is.

an xdr XML-data reduced file is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XDR files
- Associate the XDR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open xml-data reduced files. Because only the current version supports the latest XDR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available BizTalk Server update.
- To make sure that your XDR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XDR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
