What is an XLA file?

XLA files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. An XLA file is an Excel add-in workbook created when a user selects the XLA option from the "Save as" dialog. It may contain predefined formulae, data, formatting, and even data conversion tools which are not built into Excel by default. An XLA add-in can only be created by Excel versions released before 2010. Newer versions can only open but can't create such add-ins. Another type of XLA file is a compressed ZIP archive used by Xlib X-Window system protocol client library. DATAIR DC/401(k) proposal preparation system saves a translation table in a different XLA file.

How to open an XLA file

You need a suitable software like Excel to open an XLA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XLA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XLA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XLA format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the XLA files comes to the following conclusion:

The XLA file extension is quite widespread and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in XLA files are:

The remaining 1% of all XLA files are files with no common format. Sometimes used for tools, stat, training, summary, updated, tree or xlsx. If you want to find out which format your XLA file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xla file to analyze".

How to solve problems with XLA files

  • Associate the XLA file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open add-in workbooks. Because only the current version supports the latest XLA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Excel update.
  • To make sure that your XLA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
