What is an XLA file?

XLA files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. An XLA file is an Excel add-in workbook created when a user selects the XLA option from the "Save as" dialog. It may contain predefined formulae, data, formatting, and even data conversion tools which are not built into Excel by default. An XLA add-in can only be created by Excel versions released before 2010. Newer versions can only open but can't create such add-ins. Another type of XLA file is a compressed ZIP archive used by Xlib X-Window system protocol client library. How to open an XLA file

You need a suitable software like Excel to open an XLA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the XLA files comes to the following conclusion:

The XLA file extension is quite widespread and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in XLA files are:

• 98% of all XLA files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. XLA files contain an app name Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Macintosh Excel or WPS Spreadsheets. There is also a globally unique identifier 00020820-0000-0000-c000-000000000046 or 00020810-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The internal containers are called Workbook, SummaryInformation, DocumentSummaryInformation and CompObj. The files are on average 73 KB in size and range from 30 KB to 710 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. These files can be linked to list, report, excel, password, plan, data, form, terbilang, details, addin, sheet, water and book.
• 1% of all XLA files use ZIP compression, multiple files are compressed and combined into one XLA file. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The files are on average 180 KB in size and range from 7 KB to 350 KB.
